Erect the Stick is an installation about work, effort and the randomness inherent in our lives. The stick here is an agent between the user and a random tool (an extension of the stick). Each tool symbolises a different career path we may take.
Work does not mean the same thing to everyone today — even if the amount of time we devote to it is roughly similar. The differences start with wages, go through health costs, and end with the social assessment of the value of our work. What we get in return does not depend on us, but on a state that resembles a lottery rather than a fair system of obtaining and sharing wealth.
